The global packaging industry must constantly reinvent itself.
Sempack looks back at 4 packaging trends for 2019
1. The connected packaging
Connected packaging will be a very marked trend and today brands have a multitude of technologies to virtually connect packaging to the digital world: QR codes, Near Field Communication (NFC), radio frequency identification (RFID), bluetooth and augmented reality.
2. Closing the loop
Consumers are demanding more recycled packaging today. But while ads related to recyclable packaging have become common in the media, those relating to recycled materials remain rare. Brands have the opportunity to respond to consumer demands for more recyclable packaging. And while eco-friendly packaging can be complex to design, consumer information on packaging must be simple, straightforward and concrete.
3. Reinventing the packaging
In terms of turnover, e-commerce has an annual growth rate of about 14% (from 2017 to 2021). And packaging professionals and brands agree that the rapid development of e-commerce has had a greater impact on business, technology, supply chain, engineering and design. packaging, than anything the industry has experienced in recent decades. E-commerce affects all parts of the supply chain.
4. The plastic-free
Consumer anxiety over plastic pollution is pushing retailers to consider plastic-free shelves. Brands must act now, either to secure their place in emerging plastic-free areas by adopting other packaging materials, or by clearly communicating the benefits of plastic packaging for their products and by addressing the problem of plastic pollution appropriately.
